Evening freight. A Southern Railway local freight makes its way east out of Knoxville, on a warm spring evening. The power this day is Southern Railway Consolidation #154 and she's pictured charging through the private Hines Crossing, just a stone's throw from the Holston River.
The 154 is one of three steam locomotives, which are owned by Gulf & Ohio Railways and used on their "Three Rivers Rambler" tourist operation in downtown Knoxville. The other two include Washington & Lincolnton #203, a 1925-vintage Baldwin Consolidation, and a 1922-vintage Baldwin 4-4-0, which spent many years at Georgia's Stone Mountain and is now a long-term restoration project at Gulf & Ohio Railways.
