Remarks & Notes
Threading The Defile

Amtrak Train #3, The Southwest Chief, exits Apache Canyon, just (railroad) east of Lamy New Mexico. The train is leaving the narrow defile in the southern tip of the Rocky Mountains, where the railroad surveyors were force to use multiple cuts and three bridges to shoehorn through the gap. Behind the rear of the train is the famed "Spider Bridge" which involves the use of a support that runs nearly perpendicular to the tracks, and straddles both sides of the canyon.

The Southwest Chief is an under-appreciated train. The New Mexico scenery is like none other in the entire system.
