A Santa Fe local (just a caboose hop at this point) arrives at the railway’s Kaiser Yard to pick up its cars and haul them along the Second District to various industries. Idling on an adjacent track is a mix of Union Pacific and Rio Grande SD45s, laying over after bringing a "Kaiser Coal Train" in from Utah and dropping their cars off at the Kaiser Steel Mill here in Fontana. Today, the Santa Fe is gone, this section of the ATSF’s Second District is Metrolink’s San Gabriel Sub, the Kaiser Mill is now owned by California Steel Industries, about half of the old mills was razed to make room for the Auto Club Raceway (earning Fontana the nickname "Fontucky"), and trainloads of coal to the mill are a thing of the past. However, Santa Fe successor BNSF Railway still has a yard here, and maintains a small fleet of GP60s and GP60Ms to handle local freight traffic. (Fontana, California – March 5, 1976)
