On Friday, September 18, Union Pacific swapped GP60 1064 for GP60 1150. When I stopped by two days later, I discovered the pleasing sound of UP 1150 idling in the yard. This surprised me, as UP crews normally shut locomotives down after they are done using them. If fact, over on the wye the two 6-axle engines off the last inbound Anaheim Hauler were shut down. In about ten hours the crew for tomorrow’s Marlboro Local will have a few minutes shaved off their morning routine, since 1150 is already operational. This GP60 was built as Southern Pacific 9600 in December 1987, and later wore UP number 5703 before assuming a new identity as UP 1150. (Anaheim, California – September 20, 2020)
