Pacific Electric Steeplecab 1624 is seen undergoing restoration in Barn 7 at the Southern California Railway Museum in Perris. Built by the PE’s Torrance Shops in 1924, this electric locomotive was a freight hauler riding on Baldwin trucks and powered by General Electric 251A motors, fed off of 600 volt DC overhead wire. This locomotive was retired in 1958 and was acquired by the Orange Empire Trolley Museum (which, as their collection expanded beyond just trolleys and interurbans, became the Orange Empire Railway Museum, and was renamed the Southern California Railway Museum in order to make clear that it is southern California’s largest railroad museum). It would be nice if the museum’s volunteers could get this piece of southern California history looking and running like new in time for its 100th birthday in 2024!
