GN 1730, as renumbered by BNSF, is a recent acquisition for the Inland NW Rail Museum at Reardan, WA. The locomotive was indeed a former GN SD9, No. 598, one of two SDs purchased with dynamic brakes for service in the Pacific Northwest. Hopefully the museum will retore this unit to a different orange and green scheme in due time. The short hood in this case is the rear of the locomotive.
