10 years ago on Wednesday April 27th, 2011, Alabama witnessed one of the worst Tornado outbreaks in history, with 62 Tornadoes and 252 deaths in the State...
One of the small town's that were hit by not one, but two Tornadoes that terrible day was the town of Cordova in Walker County.
Cordova was hit very hard the morning of April 27th by an EF3 Tornado when a line of severe storms came through that was not really expected the night before...
The morning storms killed 5 people in the State and left over 250,000 people without power, making it very difficult to get Tornado Warnings out to the public later on that afternoon. The morning storms alone was historic, but the afternoon would be a whole different kind of beast...
The first Tornado of the afternoon was an EF4 that went right through downtown Cullman around 3:00 pm and kept moving up into the Tennessee valley, after that, multiple long track violent Tornadoes touched down all across the state, many down on the ground at the same time destroying city's and town's like Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, Hackleburg, Ohatchee, Cordova, etc. I could go on & on.
The town of Cordova would be hit for a second time around 5:00 pm by an EF4 tornado after being hit by an EF3 early that morning...
above is an image I took a couple of weeks ago on March 6th, 2021 of Norfolk Southern Train 320 coming through Cordova, everything seen in this image was destroyed by the Tornadoes on April 27th, but the town of Cordova has rebuilt, as every other city and town has since that horrible, unforgotten day.
April 27th, 2011 will be a day no one will forget...
People, please take Tornado warnings seriously, all it takes is one to come through where you live and your life will be changed forever!
If anyone has a story about April 27th, please comment, I'd love to hear it!
