Remarks & Notes
Santa Fe GP38 3504 rolled out of the General Motors Electro-Motive Division factory in McCook* IL in June 1970, wearing the ATSF’s attractive blue and yellow "pinstripe" scheme. This Geep then operated dependably for well over forty years, as this locomotive changed paint schemes (to ATSF’s "Yellow Warbonnet") and road numbers (it became ATSF 2304 and, following the merger with Burlington Northern, BNSF 2194). Sadly, this loco has outlived its usefulness for BNSF, and the engine was retired and sold. Sitting in a deadline with much younger locomotives, such as early Nineties Dash 8s, awaiting movement to its new owner (most likely Larry’s Truck & Electric). This engine, however, will have the last laugh over those under-thirty GEs, as it will likely soldier on for many more years for a new owner – likely a shortline or regional. (Barstow, California – February 16, 2018). Photographed on railroad property with permission and full PPE. * - Fun Fact: EMD’s plant, commonly thought to be located in La Grange IL, is actually located in McCook.
