There are few tales of preservation attempts that are as unknown, yet so sad as the story of the National Railways of Mexico #3028. The NdeM 4-8-4's, named 'Niagara' were perhaps some of the strongest and defining features of Mexican railroading in the steam era. They were incredibly multi-purpose, and could be seen on everything from local freights to passenger trains. If the 4-8-4 was a multi-purpose locomotive, then the NdeM 4-8-4's perhaps fit this role the best. 3028 was brought to the United States in hopes of being restored back into operation, but when the owner couldn't afford the restoration (and ultimately died), the bank seized the locomotive. Now, it sits stored on the NH&I with very little hope of being restored. As is the case with many unique steam locomotives.
