PR-3 cruises out from under the former New York New Haven and Hartford Pawtucket - Central Falls station as they proceed south towards Providence to work the Providence Journal and eventually Port of Providence. Opened in January of 1916, and built along the border of Pawtucket and Central Falls, the 4-track station was designed to consolidate train stops and boasted luxurious interiors—which were, at the time reflective of the prospering local Milling industry. Unfortunately by the late 1950s both the New Haven and local Mills were beginning their decline, leading to the eventual closure and abandonment of the magnificent station in 1960. To this day the building remains disused but is no stranger to rail action, with P&W freights running almost daily, and near-constant commuter moves along Amtrak’s electrified Shoreline (Northeast Corridor) mainline.
