Colfax, California is a railroad town to the core, a legendary town first serviced by the Central Pacific Railroad and later the Southern Pacific. The railroad was also the southern terminus of the Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad until its removal in 1942. The town is proud of its railroad heritage, as evidenced by the train-themed businesses and the small railroad museum, and Southern Pacific caboose. Smoke from the ongoing Dixie Fire obscured the town as an Eastbound Z train crosses over Grassvalley Street in the heart of town.
