Remarks & Notes
Engine Trouble. New York City Transit Authority (NYCTA) R3 motor flat no. 41 (Magor Car Corp., 1931-1932) sits on the back of a lo-boy trailer from Silk Road Specialized, awaiting departure from the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal. The truck appeared to be having some technical difficulties, with it's hood open both times I saw it that day. No. 41 was one of two motor flats - aka "drill motors" - built under Contract R3, which provided work equipment for the new Independent Subway System. Sister no. 42 was involved in a collision and later scrapped, but no 41 managed to survive through years out of service in Coney Island Yard (CIY). Per nycsubway.org, it was owned by the Trolley Museum of New York for many years, then sold to Railway Preservation Corp. On September 1, 2021 it finally left TA property, bound for its new, or perhaps old owners; the Trolley Museum of New York! While I was sad to see it leaving, I was very happy to see it heading to some form of preservation rather than continuing to sit derelict in CIY awaiting an uncertain future.
