"Demolish It! Third Track It!"
On September 18th, 2021 at 0745hrs, Long Island Rail Road's Nassau Interlocking Tower was demolished after serving the railroad for almost a century. The Gateway Demo/Civil Corporation excavator is already halfway through the tower while posters aiming to save the tower hang on a nearby telephone pole.
Nassau Tower was opened in 1923 and closed on July 11th, 2020 at 10:01hrs when control was shifted to LIRR's Jamaica Center Control (JCC) while this portion of the line was shut down to support Third Track construction projects. It was the second tower outside of the Jamaica area to be shifted. Several higher priority projects allowed the tower to stand for a over year after being closed but because it stood on the right of way of the new Main Line Third Track (spanning from Floral Park to Hicksville), it had to be demolished. Old photos of the tower were posted up on several of the poles in the area in an attempt to save the tower by having it relocated. Unfortunately, those efforts were unsuccessful.
