Steamscape: Victorian wood-burners in the Los Pinos Valley. A pair of narrow gauge, 1875 Baldwin wood-burners team up to pull a vintage freight past the Los Pinos Tank (MP 325.50), toward Cumbres Pass in August of 2021, during the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad's Victorian Iron Horse Round-Up. Although this operation was clearly not historically accurate for this line, it was an incredible opportunity to re-create something that has likely not happened anywhere in the US in nearly a century, and may not happen again for a very long time. Pictured here are Eureka & Palisade #4 "Eureka", owned by Mr. Daniel Markoff of Las Vegas, NV, and Carson & Tahoe Lumber & Fluming Co. #1 "Glenbrook", owned by the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City, NV. Both locomotives were built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia, PA in 1875 and both are believed to have been on the erecting floor at the same time. Both now sport features that were not original equipment, such as lifting injectors and air brake pumps, which are appliances that were typically added to many locomotives of this era, within just a few years of their construction as locomotive technology rapidly advanced.
