Remarks & Notes
Amtrak's newest locomotive, the ALC-42 (Amtrak Long-distance Charger, 4,200hp), #301 in the 50th Anniversary "Day 1" livery (modeled after the one-off E8 painted for Amtrak's first day of operations), poses in Ivy City with P42 #160 wearing the 50th Anniversary Dash 8 Phase III "Pepsi can" livery in the background.

The 301's Day 1 livery is a fitting tribute to the historic milestone of 50 years of Amtrak, as many people expected Amtrak would fail. The utilitarian black-with-elongated-arrow logoed livery never caught on, and was the sole "full liveried" Amtrak locomotive for about a year. Now this livery reemerges on Amtrak's most modern and technologically advanced conventional passenger locomotive.

The Charger locomotives are planned to replace the P40 and P42 fleets as Amtrak's next generation of locomotive. Amtrak designed a new nose for this variant of the "Charger" locomotive for enhanced maintainability due it being replaceable, and improved aesthetics while still providing for full interoperability with all other conventional equipment.
