We don't need water today. Rio Grande Southern Motor #5 (aka "Galloping Goose") rumbles past the water column adjacent to the section house on the 10,015 ft. high Cumbres Pass (MP 330.7) during a 2018 visit to the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad. Unlike a steam-powered train, this internal combustion-powered critter doesn't need to make water stops....which was one of the reasons why she was built. Beginning in the 1930s, the Galloping Geese pretty much picked up all of the Rio Grande Southern's meager passenger traffic and after that time, the only steam trains left on the line were nearly all dedicated to freight service.
"Goose" #5 is owned by the City of Dolores, CO, which sits right along the old RGS right-of-way. She was restored and is maintained by the Galloping Goose Historical Society of Dolores and makes frequent visits to both the Cumbres & Toltec and the Durango & Silverton.
