A Rare Find! While waiting in Thurmond for one of the 1987 New River Trains to pass through, I photographed this box car sitting beside the Engine Shed. It wasn't until recently that I came across this slide in my collection and became curious as to the car's history. With the help of the C&O Historical Society, the information was found. The car is a 40 Ton Auto Box of Pere Marquette lineage. It was 44 ft - 7-1/2" coupler to coupler. Wood sheath with steel ends. The drawing from the C&O Archives was dated December 10th 1930 with a Build Date of 1913. The actual build date of this car is unknown due to lack of any markings. If anyone has any additional information on this car please contact me. I would really like to know what happened to it after 1987.
