Flatback. Union Pacific Railroad LOA32, the Anaheim Local, has long been the target of railfans' cameras because of the significant amount of mid-street trackage that it covers during its run as it serves customers in the Southeast Anaheim and Platinum Triangle areas of the city. There was an extra bonus on Thursday, March 31, 2022 as UP 1375 (née-Southern Pacific 3199, GP40P-2, 11/1974) held down the assignment on its own. This engine is one of 16 GP40 variants built by EMD for passenger service, its extended body capped with a flat back to accommodate a steam generator. Of the 16, this and sister unit 1373 are the only ones left with unusual feature. The others, Indiana Harbor Belt 4010 GP40P-2 and the 13 ex-Central Railroad of New Jersey units that now serve New Jersey Transit, have been rebuilt and have the more familiar angled cap. The engine is seen leading with its distinctive long hood forward as it travels down West Santa Ana Street passing Landmark Lane in Anaheim, California returning from the day’s work.
