I surprised how busy the UP coal mainline to the PRB was in the 2 hours we were around it. 5-6 empties chased each other west out of North Platte towards South Morrill. As we worked east the scenery kind of dies out from Keystone toward O'Fallon. Here a combo empties with 297 cars has just crossed to the northside of the North Platte River east of Keystone. Lonely code line pole for a lonely place.
Photos showing the railroad pole lines. The pole line used four basic electrical circuits - telegraph, telephone, signaling, and power. Modern technologies of fiber optics, microwave, radio, satellite, and computers have been replacing the pole lines.
