Remarks & Notes
A lot of old train stations (such as Los Angeles Union Station, Chicago Union Station and New York’s Grand Central Terminal), and even some new stations (such as New York’s Moynihan Train Hall, have great open spaces. Washington DC’s Union Station, opened in 1908, has such an open space, called the Great Hall. Nearly adjacent to the Capitol, this used to be the waiting room, but today it is used primarily for special events. This prominent D.C. venue was modeled after Rome's Baths of Diocletian and features barrel vaulted ceilings lined with 23-carat gold leaf, white marble floors and remarkably oversized windows. The Main Hall can accommodate 4,000 guests for a cocktail party or 2,200 for a seated dinner. (Washington DC – April 15, 2022)
