The New Yorkers. Key System/Richmond Shipyard Railway cars 561 and 563 (Gilbert Car Company of Troy, New York, 1887) were built for service on the elevated Manhattan Railway in New York, New York. Rebuilt for Electric MU operation, ownership of the cars were assumed by the Interboro Rapid Transit Co. (IRT), and later the Board Of Transportation. When service on the Board Of Transportation’s Second Avenue El was discounted in 1942, these cars were sent to California to operate between Oakland and the Kaiser shipyards in Richmond. The cars were purchased by the Pacific Coast Chapter of the Railway and Locomotive Historical Society and even operated an excursion over Key System trackage before going to the Western Railway Museum in 1960.
