Remarks & Notes
Amtrak’s westbound California Zephyr climbs out of Rocky, Colorado, on October 12, 2022, with private car “Northern Sky” carrying the markers. This dome-observation “Grand Touring Car” is operated by Northern Sky Charters and is based in Chicago. Built by American Car & Foundry in 1955 as Union Pacific No. 9003 for operation on the “City of Los Angeles,” the car was eventually sold to the original Auto-Train in 1973. Rebuilt by its current owner, it has been in deluxe charter service since 1992 and was redecorated in 2013.
