"HHP-8s are Back, but with a Catch"
On the evening of October 23th, 2022, Amtrak's eastbound Crescent is seen making its local station stop on the NEC at New Brunswick, NJ with ACS-64 622 leading newly released Bombardier HHP-8C Non-powered Control Unit (NPCU) #90691.
Amtrak 90691 (ex-AMTK 691, née AMTK 661) is the first of a handful of Bombardier HHP-8C NPCU "conversions" that will be utilized on services that require double-ended operation, such as the Ethan Allen Express Burlington Extension, to reduce the strain on the powered locomotive fleet. The HHP-8C conversions feature removed pantographs, updated PTC package and other minor upgrades which will allow them to properly lead trains as a cab/control car.
