I've been photographing the Batten Kill Railroad for almost 20 years now. When I first started, I was a college student and I was single. Now, I'm married and have two kids. There's not too many photo angles that I haven't already done. So, when I take my four-year old with me, most of the time I just enjoy watching him watch the Alcos do their thing.
On our most recent outing, however, my son asked me to give him his little camera so that he could take videos of the train. As the train approached Shushan northbound with 14 loads off Pan Am Southern in tow, my son stood on this bench to take his video, and I saw a photo opportunity.
This is the only photo I took of the Batten Kill this day, but it's likely my favorite photo I've taken in all my 20 years of photographing the railroad.
New York state has the largest number of ALCO diesel locomotives working in everyday service. Here are some of them. Soon I hope to chronicle all of them.
