Remarks & Notes
Oil fired 2-8-2 "Mikado" 141 R # 1187 of the SNCF exhibited in the "Cité du Train" railway museum of Mulhouse. Built in 1946 by Baldwin with work number 73008. The 141 R of the French state railroad SNCF is a steam locomotive series with the wheel arrangement 1'D1' or 2-8-2 (also known as "Mikado"). In a sense, it represented a curiosity on their tracks, as it did not conform to French design principles, but featured the rugged design of US steam locomotives. From 1945 to 1974, the 1323 locomotives were in service on most of the French network, hauling both the heaviest express and long freight trains. They were undemanding in terms of maintenance, and the 739 coal-fired machines among them processed a wide variety of coal qualities without any problems thanks to a stoker. In the first few years after the Second World War, the 141 Rs accounted for around one third of all train kilometers and 49 % of the total gross ton kilometers at the SNCF. This made the 141 R the dominant series in French train operation.
