| Over 16K tons of manifest freight burdens the 5 road jacks (note the two 'swings' across the way) tasked with delivering the tonnage to Roseville on the 1% grade that will soon be achieved at Sand Pass. The Western Pacific's mainline between California and Utah may have been longer than that of rival Southern Pacific, but enjoys grades of no more than 1%, a feature that the successor to both roads takes to full advantage. From the solitude of the Great Basin Desert to the confines of the Feather River Canyon, the old WP was and still is an incredible piece of western railroading. |
