The 223 series have been the main fleet for services in Osaka-Kobe-Kyoto metropolitan area. The -1000 subseries have a modified design on both body and mechanical parts. Entered service in 1995, these trains are in use on rapid services of Biwako Line, Kyoto Line, and Kobe Line.
