A Newly Open Curve. The extensive tree clearing of that year made this picture of NS 2646 (SD70M, 12/2004, EMD) possible on August 26, 2016, seen coming westbound and still up grade around Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania. For a long time, this landmark on the views of this former Pennsylvania were obstructed, but a cooperative effort between Norfolk Southern, the Railroaders Memorial Museum, and local officials resulted in 10 weekends of foliage removal, making the "World Famous Horseshoe Curve" a place to look forward to viewing from the train and to visit to photograph the frequent train traffic. This past week, there was another round of coordinated brush clearing to continue to keep this open view for another generation.
