The Gornergrat Bahn (GGB), cogwheel railway from Zermatt up to the Gornergrat, celebrated 125 years of operation in 2023. On august, 20, the electric locomotive He 2/2 # 3003, built in 1898 by SLM and BBC, was exhibited on the Gornergrat, Gold-plated with gold leaf. The 132 kW locomotive was officially decomissioned on april, 23, 2023 only, although it has not been used for decades anymore. After august, 20, access to the locomotive was still closed for many weeks, first a wheelchair-accessible path had to be created and various information boards were erected. Now the "Golden Spot" (official designation) is open for the public and will be a "must" to photograph in front of the mighty Matterhorn for the visitors. Two people were employed for 1 month to make the golden locomotive, applying over 14000 pieces of 8x8 cm 23 3/4 carat Rosenobel red gold leaves.
