Remarks & Notes
Stealing one at West Penn. The Reading & Northern's big T-1 Locomotive #2102 makes her charge through the tiny borough of West Penn, PA, taking her 15-car, fall colors train north toward Jim Thorpe under a very changeable sky.

It is interesting how a snapshot in time like this can leave the viewer with the impression that this was a nice, sunny day, but such was not the case at all. The passage of a cold front the previous evening left unstable air and a gusty wind over Eastern Pennsylvania. The result was a persistent cloud deck, with some brief peeks of sun and also some scattered rain showers. Photographers chasing the 2102 this day were going to have to get lucky to get any calendar shots. Such was the case here. As I arrived at this location, the sun was out and things were looking positive. But literally the moment we began hearing the stack-talk of the speeding locomotive in the distance, one of those puffy, white clouds took our sun away. I then experienced 60 seconds of anxiety that I think every railroad photographer who is reading this can relate to....in spades. Looking in the distance, I can see the train bearing down on us. Looking up, I analyze the swirling white mass for any hope that it will blow clear of the sun in time. The train is blowing for the River Road crossing....still no sun. Just seconds before the train hits the crossing, a boundary of dark shadow and bright sun appears near the crossing, racing northeast at break-neck speed. Fortunately, mother nature turned out to be faster than a speeding locomotive this day and the light sweeps over the small group of us gathered here, letting us steal one on a day when winners were few and far between.
