Genesee And Wyoming’s First Diesel. Genesee & Wyoming Inc. Railroad 20 is a General Electric 80 ton centercab locomotive, and was the first diesel-electric locomotive owned by the New York State shortline when it was a 14-mile railroad serving a single customer near Restof, New York. Today, G&W owns or leases and operates more than 100 freight railroads across two continents. On the night of January 24, 2021, it sits at the Lake Shore Railway Museum in North East, Pennsylvania. This museum’s proximity to both the original G&W line well as the GE facility in Erie, Pennsylvania made it a good fit to receive the locomotive from the Youngstown Steel Heritage Foundation in 2015. When sufficient funding is received, it will be restored. On March 24, 2024, Genesee & Wyoming raised a flag at its Darien, Connecticut headquarters to mark the 125th Anniversary of the March 24, 1899 date when the company was formed to acquire that 14-mile line.
