Remarks & Notes |
We're looking north down the 1.8% grade straight section on one of the most respected piece of railroad in this region while CSX M583-29 and pushers H381-29 is making run is the short but steep 2 mile section of the Cumberland Mountain. As Quoted from David P. Morgan "Cumberland Mountain was the cross that the NC had to bear!" Even today it's definitely the mountain of challenge for modern day CSX. Since the completion in the mid 1800s this piece of railroad has a tragic history of showing no mercy to those that misjudged the grueling gradient of this Mountain. History of derailment has dated as far back in Dec 23, 1915, March 15, 1918 and as recent as Spring of 2018 Derailment. With the max of 2.4% this is highly respected piece of railroad that even I can attest and many before me that had the opportunity to run this piece of railroad. |
