A pair of Tavantolgoi Railway’s “Black Bricks” EMD SD70ACe/LW locomotives are currently operating on the Gobi section of the Trans-Mongolian mainline under Ulaanbaatar Railway JSC. These machines are working under a short-term rental contract, alongside locomotives (2TE25KM, 2TE116UM, 2ZAGAL and M62) manufactured in Russia, Ukraine, the former Soviet Union, and Mongolia.
In addition, Tavantolgoi Railway LLC owns a total of 16 EMD SD70ACe/LW units, with the remaining 14 units serving on its dedicated coal export line to China via the Gashuunsukhait border port.
This photo was taken during Mongolia’s Gobi Rail Photography Tour, which explores some of the most remote and visually striking parts of the Trans-Mongolian Railway.
