A historic shot from July 1967. Steam on the Southern region ended on 9th July that year. I was on holiday in Devon and heard that there was some steam left at Salisbury. As a sixteen year old lad, I got on a train and went to Salisbury and to the shed. When I asked if I could go round, The chap at the desk said, well, the shed's closed, but you can go round if you want. There were forty locos gathered there, all dead. Steam had finished three days earlier and I had missed all the farewell fuss. The locos were being gathered ready for their trip to the scrapyard. This one, a USA Class ( built in the US in 1943 for the USATC in Europe and later acquired by The Southern Railway) was luckier than most, finding its way into preservation at the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway. Note the chalked inscriptions.
