Remarks & Notes
The clouds parted just in time to illuminate UP 4-8-4 #8444, leading a westbound passenger special on the Evanston Subdivision at Castle Rock, Utah. The Los Angeles Union Passenger Terminal celebrated 50 years of service in May of 1989, and UP sent the 8444 west to be a part of the event. The classic two tone gray passenger livery was applied to the 8444 in August of 1987 and would remain active until she was returned to her glossy black freight livery in 1996. The 8444 would be renumbered the UP 844 (it's factory original number) by July of 1989 upon the retirement of an EMD GP30. UP E9 #951 was along for the ride this day to provide dynamic braking for the lengthy train. At the time of the photo, the 951 was the last active E unit on the Union Pacific roster, still equipped with it's factory twin 12 cylinder 567 prime movers.
