Remarks & Notes
It is April, 1970 and we are looking east in the NF&D yard at Lawrenceville, VA and at their small locomotive facility. From left to right, we find N&W GP9 No. 865 getting fueled at their only fuel plug, located on the main line. To the right of that is N&W RS-11 No. 390 awaiting its next assignment. NF&D was a subsidiary of N&W, and usually had some power leased or rented from the parent. On the right is the shop building constructed shortly after N&W purchased the Atlantic and Danville and renamed it Norfolk, Franklin and Danville. NF&D RS-11 No. 201 is inside the shop for servicing or some light repair. The shop force in Lawrenceville consisted on one mechanic and one laborer and locomotives were sent to the N&W at Roanoke for anything other than light repairs.
