| Houston...err I mean Minneapolis "we have a problem". The last of an unfortunate string of events for the Soo Line in Upper Michigan occurred on Halloween evening 1984 when the Soo Lift Bridge became stuck in this position. In about a five year span the Soo had suffered through in order, a head on at Malacca(three units destroyed and two damaged). Two GP38-2's diving into a beaver pond at Thomaston. Another head on at Gilchrist(two units destroyed and three units damaged. Then this misfortune at the lift bridge. It stopped lake boat traffic for a couple of days thru the Soo Locks...one of the worlds busiest waterways. I had heard that Soo-CP Rail ate the cost for the shipping delays. It was no wonder that the route was soon downgraded and most COFC traffic was sent via CSX trackage rights through Lower Michigan. I can only imagine that the unfortunate bridge tender on duty this evening retired to the bar after his shift. |
