Having had a successful run the previous day, 765 rests in the yard. To be honest, I was stunned when I captured this image. Other than a little bit of straightening and sharpening in Photoshop, this picture came as-is from the camera. No extra blur, no added contrast, no nothing. After I took the image, I had the chance to talk with three of the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society crew members. They were on-duty from 9 PM to 2 AM to keep the fire going and watch over the locomotive until another crew came. This July night was already warm, and the heat from the fire made it even warmer in the cab. However, their job was an important piece of making the daytime operation possible. It is easy for us railfans to forget all of the work involved behind-the-scenes to keep a machine like this in operation. There are jobs that often go unnoticed, but having men and women who perform them makes it possible for us to enjoy events like Train Festival, photo charters, and excursions.
