Diehard photographers of the OLD UP will recognize this seldom seen side of Sherman Hill, the west slope so-to-speak. Late afternoons in the summer presented somewhat of a degree of difficulty getting sunlit trains, as the thermals out of the valley really blossomed. Get some sun though, and the upslope winds of the plains east of Cheyenne often brought towering cumulo-nimbus to add depth to the shot. Here an empty coal train drops down the "easy" grade towards Colores and Laramie on track 1. Just above the last unit and behind can be seen the west signal bridge of Hermosa, CP545. Barely visible on the right is the Red Buttes line, dropping off the table downgrade to Laramie on track B3, the preferred westbound route off the hill. Two eastbounds on track 2 are about to meet the 3619, while the last of the afternoon fleet of shooters glide by on B3, dynamics whining.
For the train and storm chaser. Trains with thunderstorms, dark clouds, rain, lightning, hurricanes - tropical storms, funnel clouds, storm light, rainbows, and snow storms.
