The Gulflander. This oddity of Australian railways departs the lightly populated town of Normanton every Wednesday for its 150km, 5 hour journey to the even smaller town of Croydon. The train is stabled overnight in Croydon before heading back to Normanton Thursday morning, a journey that has been repeated every week for over 100 years. What makes this journey unique is the fact that the line is completely isolated from the rest of the Queensland railway network, it is the last working mail train in Queensland and the track is built using only steel sleepers. While other lines of this type closed many years ago, this train has continued to operate despite not carrying any freight and there being absolutely no discernible reason for anybody to want to travel between the two towns.
RM93, the present Gulflander, is a 102 horsepower Gardner diesel engine railmotor built at Ipswich Railway Workshops in 1950. It arrived in Normanton in 1982
