| Slightly over 50 years ago Gresley A4 Pacific No 60008 Dwight D. Eisenhower accelerates away from its stop at Potters Bar with the 7.15pm Kings Cross, London to Peterborough semi-fast train as my wife Mickey looks over the fence. This engine was built in 1937 for working the 'West Riding' streamlined train between Leeds and London and was originally named Golden Shuttle. It was renamed after the Allied Supreme Commander in September 1945 and was taken out of service in July 1963 and presented to the National Railroad Museum of Greenbay, Winconsin, USA. It has just been returned to the UK together No 60010 Dominion of Canda from the Expo Museum at Montreal, Canada for exhibition in the UK next year for the 75th annniversary of sister engine No 60022 Mallard's world speed record of 126 mph. |
