Remarks & Notes
Charles Town, WV 11/20/2012 - The shadows of passing freight cars in the distance create a ghostly image of Norfolk Southern's northbound 38Q along the NS "H-line" to Hagerstown. Amid grand old trees, an aged B&O CPL signal stands sentry along the CSX Shenandoah Subdivision, protecting the diamond crossing with the former N&W route. The Shenandoah Subdivision links Winchester, VA and points south with the Cumberland Subdivision at Harper's Ferry. Few trains traverse this winding B&O route through the Virginia countryside--a daily local and a bi-weekly stone train to a quarry south of Winchester--while the former N&W "H-Line" sees many manifest and intermodal trains each day. Image taken from a private road crossing. ISO 500, f/4.5, 30 seconds.
