On the last day of January 1979, Southern Pacific GP9R 3190 (with sister engine 3191) shuttle between the engine servicing area and the passenger station for assignment to two of the SP's many commuter trains. SP "Commute" GP9 3007 (ex-SP 5625) was rebuilt at the road's Sacramento Shops in August 1977, at which point it lost its dual control stands and, as a result, the red wings on the long-hood end. It was also renumbered 3190 and had their model changed to GP9R. These GP9s were eventually bumped from passenger service when new operator Caltrain received new equipment in 1985, at which point they were assigned to the SP's freight operations.
