Remarks & Notes
Union Pacific's 4-6-6-4 Challenger #3985 was assigned to run an excursion from Salt Lake City to Provo and return on June 27, 1982. The coal burning steamer was built by the American Locomotive Company in July 1943 and was brought out of retirement and returned to service in April 1981. Photographed on the return tip to Salt Lake City, the Challenger has stopped at milepost P-774.8 at Point of the Mountain while a dry cheatgrass fire offers proof that the 3985 does indeed burn coal. In fact, 3985 set 72 separate fires on the trip to Provo and return, prompting the UP to eventually convert 3985 to burn oil.
