By 1980, the family lines scheme had overtaken a lot of the classic Clinchfield roster, as is evident with one of the railroads older power units, GP38 2002. Shown with the Marion shifter, it sits on the siding in Marion, NC with a single tank car and one of the railroad's older cabooses. The cabs were originally wood sheathed, however, they were eventually upgraded to metal sides, however, due to age, they were restricted to mine run or shifter duty, which was noted by a large "R" on the side. 35mm slide from my collection, photographer unknown.
