To connect rails of differing size the compromise joint was the primary tool for the job. But in today’s environment of a smooth running track surface, a joint is the last thing you want to use if you can help it. Thus the compromise rail was created to perform the same task of connecting rails of differing sizes but without the use of joint bars. Created by electrically flash-butt welding or manually shop welding two rail sizes together, the compromise rail can offer a more reliable weld than a standard thermite type all the while keeping the track running surface smooth in today’s CWR environment.
