While most loaded trains at the Sandaoling Coal Railway, make it up the tough 2%+ grade with only minor wheelslip, JS #8173 had alot tougher time on January 21st. This train was severely overloaded at the mine, and stalled out several times on its ascent up and out of the Opencast Pit mine. In this photo, the massive 2-8-2 and its heavy train have stalled once again, this time on the toughest part of the grade. Here the train is seen spinning its drivers, after yet another attempt at starting its train. After over 45 minutes of dramatic steam railroading, the train finally made it up the grade.
