Wild N' Wonderful West Virginia... Remarkably, only 15 miles from West Virginia's capital city of Charleston, the unique and obscure Winifede Railroad eases toward their small interchange yard at Chesapeake with CSX company hoppers in tow.. The esoteric railroad, which is loading coal for an export customer, operates very scarcely along the hollow of Fields Creek. Despite being surrounded by a plethora of Chesapeake & Ohio coal branches to the south, east, and west, the Winifrede Railroad has always been a standalone short line railroad. Today, Winifrede uses two leased JPTX four-axle GP38-2's for power, while all operations are maintained by the West Virginia based, Appalachian Railcar Services.
