Remarks & Notes
As it starts to descend downgrade, a BNSF unit tank train enters into the famous "sag" on the Joint Line near the summit of Palmer Lake. This location is one of the 3 areas on the Joint Line where the Santa Fe originally crossed over rival Rio Grande on their route to Denver. When the United States Railway Administration (USRA) took control of all railroads during WWI, the crossovers were eliminated and tracks realigned to create a directional running set of main lines between Denver and Pueblo. This was done in an effort to make train movements more efficient along the route. The realignment created the sight we have today where a BNSF train is seen transitioning from its own right of way onto that of the rival UP. The original bridge abutment from the crossover is just to the right of the lead unit.
