Remarks & Notes
The Pennsylvania Railroad had 550 Class R50b express refrigerator cars. Built with four-wheel passenger trucks, they were designed for speed, largely to transport milk to urban markets. This example has certainly outlived its usefulness by at least the better part of two decades before this photo was taken. Whitelined, shoved into the cinders and devoid of a drawbar, this car was probably not worth the effort to repair and rerail when its sisters were hauled to the scrapper. Those circumstances ultimately saved its life, and it now stands as the lone survivor of its class at the Railroaders Memorial Museum in Altoona.
